What hidden information travels with my photo?

Share a copy without sharing the camera’s hidden record.

EXIF may contain camera settings, timestamps and GPS coordinates. XMP can contain editing notes, rights and creator information. Do not assume all metadata is AI-related or unwanted.

Decide what needs to stay

Photo metadata can include location, capture details, descriptions, and information used to display an image correctly. A privacy task is not always a reason to delete every field. If your concern is location, look for GPS information and descriptive location text, rather than assuming one visible GPS entry is the only relevant item. Keep an untouched original for your private archive.

Check before and after

First choose an image you own or have permission to modify. Review the metadata categories reported by the inspector, select the intended removal scope, and export a separate file. Reopen that exported file—not the original—in a suitable metadata inspector. Where privacy matters, use a second independent local inspector and look for warnings or unsupported fields. Record any uncertainty instead of treating an incomplete scan as a clean bill of health.

Protect the displayed image

Orientation and color information can affect how the file appears. Removing a display-related tag can produce a sideways image or different-looking colors even when the encoded picture data was not changed. Check the output in more than one viewer when the picture matters. Avoid replacing your original until the exported version has passed these checks.

Look beyond metadata

Street signs, faces, reflections, documents, and recognizable surroundings may identify a location or person directly in the picture. Filenames, captions, attached sidecar files, and earlier online copies need separate consideration. Cleaning one file does not change these other places. Preserve appropriate credits and be clear about edits rather than treating a cleaner as an identity or authenticity tool.

Is “no GPS found” the same as anonymous?

No. The inspector may have limited coverage, and visible content or other records may still reveal location.

Will the image look exactly the same?

Check it. Orientation and color handling can change the displayed result even without recompressing picture data.
